Who is a teacher?

On this Teacher's Day,just wanted to share my thoughts on who a teacher is.Think of the word 'teacher', the image is of a typical Classroom setting and of a person who is in control of the Class. For me a teacher could be anyone with whom one has a meaningful interaction and there is potential for a shift. From the time we are born, and as we grow,we come across different teachers in our lives.
Parents being the first significant teachers - looking at the smile on its mother's face,an infant learns to respond. In the process of growing up,basic life skills like early language ,balancing and walking - all come from the parents.
A little later during the school going years,a child comes in contact with teachers in the Class, but again a teacher is only someone who has been able to create an impact in the child's life.Merely subject teaching is not teaching.Creating a love for learning, kindling curiosity, giving the clue and direction to be able to discover answers is what teaching is all about.
Friends are important teachers too. They influence and inspire our lives in many ways.Books are teachers and so is Nature. The vastness of the sky,the strength and endurance of the mountains, the calmness of the sea - there is a lot to learn and gain from there.
When I close my eyes and think of all those who have touched my life in various ways - I know who a teacher is!
